Picking a New Roof Color For the Dollhouse

We’re restoring a family heirloom, the dollhouse made for my husband’s grandmother when she was a little girl. Click here to see all the posts about our Dollhouse Redux Project.

We spent yesterday in negotiations over what color we should paint the dollhouse roof.

To refresh your memory, here is the current state of the roof:

Originally I wanted to go with a sage green (mostly so we could use the leftover paint to repaint our kitchen chairs; you know, have a two-for-one type project). Our daughter wanted purple. We decided to do a quick mock up with Photoshop to see what the roof might look like.

Good thing we did this mock up because neither of us liked the colors we had originally picked!

We ended up agreeing, fittingly enough, on a color that’s a variation on the red roof we already have: the Red Delicious color that’s part of the Land of Nod collection by the non-toxic paint company (and locally available), Mythic Paints, shown above as #6.

What do you think? What would you have picked?
(If it were only up to me, I would have gone with #1. Love that magenta!)

  1. I’m loving the red! It looks so traditional! And shingle-y! Are you going to do the window trim in red too?

  2. In the abstract, I would have chosen either the sage or the one you actually chose; for an heirloom piece, though, I have to say that I like your choice best. =) I love Mara’s suggestion about the window trim! Might be a moment for another creative Photoshop mock-up test?

  3. I’m a bit of a sucker for the old and worn look, but would definitely lean toward a similar color–#6 would work wonderfully. Are you repainting it out of concern for lead? I really don’t know much about old paint myself. Excitedly anticipating more dollhouse posts!

    1. We are repainting because of lead paint present in the older, underlying layers of paint. Instead of sanding and painting, we’re now just painting to seal it up and make it safe for little ones. Stay tuned for many more posts! I am so excited about this project.

    1. I personally love that idea, if only our daughter were on board too! I’m finding balancing what I’d like to do to the house with what our three year old wants to be the most challenging aspect of the project!

Maybe we can incorporate some black and white decorating elements throughout the house. I am particularly enamored with painting the stairs in a bold, playful way! And I think the idea of adding a chalkboard space in the house is brilliant. I even have a can of chalkboard painting lying around here somewhere…

  4. This gave me such a great idea! I was trying to think about what to do about my dollhouse roof b/c my Granny used little yellow stones, but about 60% of them have fallen off. I think I’ll remove the rest and just paint it. Thank you!

  5. I can’t believe she went for red over pink! This looks so fantastic, I can’t wait to come and play with it (and the adorable toddler)!

  6. Love this project! I’ve always wanted a nice dollhouse. It looks like the exterior of the house was intended to look like a Tudor. I would probably keep the house white and paint the trim dark brown/black.
