Swapping the Sand Out of the Sand and Water Table

Our daughter loves playing in the sand and water table that we set up on our back porch.

She plays on the porch for hours, excavating shells, driving matchbox cars on ramps and over bridges, playing in the water, building castles with sticks.

Unfortunately the play area has gotten to be a bit of a mess.

Actually that’s a bit of an understatement.

With sand in both sections of the table (the side that drains should contain just water) and sand all over the floor, our back porch had morphed into a big wet sandy mess.

We decided to swap out the sand for inexpensive colored aquarium gravel.

So far, so good.

      1. of course not. pink is where it’s at these days. all the cool kids are doing it you know. :P

  1. Ooh, good idea! The nursery school where I taught always had to have separate sensory and water tables as we tended to use pasta noodle shapes or rice as inexpensive sensory table filler. Love the color you all chose!

  2. So clever, you are my crafty inspiration. Because of you I try hard to do at least one crafty thing with Enzo every day. May be just putting stickers on a piece of paper, but we try! :)

  3. yes, that is why we opted for a separate water and sand table! I filled the sand table with some extra bulk grains I had around – amaranth, brown rice, and spelt. All was well until we discovered the birds loved it too much and started pooing on the porch from eating all the swept off grain…and now we have a ton of sprouted grain where it isn’t welcome…live and learn!
