Arts and Craft Storage IKEA Fail

Remember that arts and craft organization project that I started but haven’t yet finished?!

Two weeks ago the little miss and I headed down to IKEA to pick up these metal boxes to fill with paints, glue/tapes, stickers, pipe-cleaners, sewing supplies, etc.

Despite the IKEA website saying they were in stock (with 3 units left — exactly what I needed!), the sales associated couldn’t find them! (“I have no idea where they are. They really could be anywhere.”)

As of yesterday, the IKEA website STILL showed our local store as having those three sets in stock SOMEWHERE IN THE STORE! I could cry.

MAJOR IKEA FAIL!

To make matters worse, it doesn’t look like the store will be getting more (according to the sales associate) and other stores appear to be out of stock across the country. I’m feeling a little defeated over here.

I want to find something that’s not translucent (so I can “hide” what’s in there from the toddler), not plastic, not cardboard, is stackable, has a tight fitting lid and is super affordable. Maybe something like these tins, but larger? I’ll let you know what we figure out. Sigh.

  1. I was just resarching this last night for our new basement project. I can’t wait to get everything put away, but you’re right, most stuff is translucent.

  2. what about the container store? do you have those out by you?

oh! another alternative would be a restaurant supply store… they usually have tons of random things, and usually pretty cheap.

  3. Bummer! If you want metal, I would check out world market or maybe a craft/party store (perhaps they have cookie-tin like containers that would work?); those would be my thoughts for other inexpensive places to look. Container Store has some round paint-can-looking white 1/2-gallon tins (about 5″ tall) for under $5.

  4. I just came from Ikea (Canada) to get more of those boxes. I love them and they get frequent use in my house. I was told they are now discontinued. Who’s the manufacturer? Ikea can’t be the only place to get them?

  5. Gawd glad to hear i am not alone in this search! I have two boxes – great for storing old photos. Surely it would be in Ikea’s best interest to restart this product and hear hear where do we all go now? The Dragons Den anyone lol? x
